MISSION STATEMENT
Grit is defined as passion and perseverance to pursue long-term goals. This epic quality is required of all people who are thriving and flourishing in today's crazy life. Family difficulties, lack of resources, inner and outer barriers to success can all derail our best efforts. Being determined, following things through, maintaining activity toward long-term goals despite obstacles and difficulties are all examples of grit. I believe that students today need to be grittier. They need to have sustained effort in pursuit of college and career goals, while fulfilling their graduation requirements in the present moment.
High school students are imbibed with poor time management and procrastination, a constant influx of information from digital sources, television, radio, etc.; distractions of all kinds, peer pressure to have bad habits, victims of/perpetrators of bullying - and all of this, for some, in a digital footprint. Students need to identify long-term goals and align their daily actions to these goals. However, what they really need to cultivate in themselves is an unrelenting sense of determination, of never giving up, of doing their best (not the best, but their best) at everything they do, and not get flustered by the inevitable deterrents to success. As David Allen says, "Mosquitoes can ruin the hunt for big game."
